Judging from the MOJO reader article, I can infer that the average MOJO reader would be in their 40s and be male with a well paid job. They were probably born in the 70s and are into rock music. They would probably be a family man. You can tell that he has a well paid job because in the article it mentions the fact he has iPhones, iPads and iPods, all of which are quite expensive. Even though iPods are old. The readers of MOJO would be keen music listeners and would probably go to music concerts every year. They enjoy having physical DVDs rather than online.

Mojo analysis
L/O: To discuss ways of analysing a target audience.
Media producers identify their intended target audience during the planning stage for a media text because it will affect the shape of a text so much. If it was aimed at kids the font used and type of writing would be different to that of an adults magazine. This is why it is vital to identify your target audience BEFORE you analyse a media text.
When analysing a media text's target audience you should think about:
Age
Gender
Class
Religion
Existing or new audience
Where they live
Income
Interests
Mass or niche? (A mass audience is a very large group of people whereas a niche audience is smaller and more focused on certain types of audience members)
Value's/Ideology
Personality
In order to understand the target audience of a magazine more, the below images help explain the social class and type of person that could be used to describe the reader.

Let's use a real magazine as an example of how to do this.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDCLNETx6Wa8Dg3ru63MjnzAVh0PARwIomEuB2453xIALCTEn3U_bFyufbFJQPguls_0vvNuGAvlqaBZJMoeKYJJu2cD34oW5c2KX8tcFArjl8Pf_5fDukQeADx6FOmxGyIOM__rp73N4/s640/The-Last-of-Us-22-01-12-EDGE-Magazine-237-cover.jpg)
Age From the cover alone it seems perhaps 17 years and above would be interested from the dark colours and mature look of the cover.
Gender Most likely male as the main image of this magazine is a male and all the games mentioned are games with a male target audience.
Class Most likely the reader of this magazine would be a B-A in the social class as it looks high quality and expensive and you have to have quite a bit of money in order to buy gaming systems and games for them.
Religion Probably any religion.
Existing or new audience Most likely an already existing audience as it comes off as a professional magazine for pro gamers who are aware of the best games and what is all the rage at the moment. Although some newer gamers may read this in hopes of becoming a gaming pro thanks to it.
Where they live Most likely they wouldn't live in a caravan or cheap housing as you need lots of space for gaming and quiet a bit of money to afford most of the games that are being advertised on the cover, such as Uncharted.
Income The target audience of this magazine most likely has either a regular income or a high income as stated in past sections games cost money.
Interests They would be interested in gaming and perhaps even game design as it states about gamings invincible and probably would tell the reader what they need to know about those games got so popular.
Mass or niche? Most likely a mass audience as lots of different kinds of people would be interested in gaming and the different games mentioned on the front cover. By having a vague target audience they are more likely to get more people picking up their magazines.
Value's/Ideology Innovators and esteem seekers.
Personality Most likely people who enjoy the company of video games more then people or people who aren't interested in talking with others. They probably are people who are laid back and enjoy getting involved.
Another term used when analysing a magazines target audience is demo and psychographics. Below are two images which list what kinds of traits fit into the above categories.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWvfGCi93gGFSey0KcZMtunAjD6_tSf6pKxaz_L5k6NEsCWXviQjNRbkLUXSeOoJNI_X5OJKb4Ik2vLw3BAKofNWjsM46GvgXuT7_R4Hn5KDoJoxRwsCxJ4SOmj-aZcve3rr2IFtJUB_A/s320/Demographics-and-Psychographics.png)
However Physcographics are things found deep within a target audience member such as someones personality and interests.

The main image on the cover of the Mojo magazine above is of the famous singer from foo fighters known as Dave Growl. He is staring forwards at the camera with a menacing look which shows a sense of power in the artist. The fact he has black hair also works with the colour pallet of the magazine which includes grey, black hair and clothing shows that he is formal and powerful, which in turn could symbolise how formal the magazine is and that they include artists who impacted the media even if they aren't modern -this links in to Dave's powerful glare and black colour scheme. He is a very masculine figure also which helps to attract the male target audience of the magazine, you can tell he is very masculine as he has a beard which is stereo typical of a masculine strong male. The pose he is in and how the makeup artists have made it so that a strand of hair is falling over his face gives a sense of drama to his image. There is also three parts of hair that have fallen over his face, 3 is considered a holy number as the holy Trinity consists of three figures, the father the son and the holy spirit. The idea of god links back to the powerful semantic field which is consistent with the main image.
The colour palette used in the main cover of the magazine consists of black yellow and grey with slight hints of blue in the background. The idea of the colour grey connotes stone and rock, which are both sturdy and also rock links to the type of music advertised in MOJO magazine. Grey could also connote dark clouds that hide the sun, which could hint at the fact the cover's dark colour scheme is hiding the beauty of music within. Yellow connotes images of the sun which again works with the idea of dark clouds hiding the joy of music inside, you could picture the yellow is the joy of music seeping out onto the cover. The yellow is contrasting to the dark colours used on the rest of the cover, but even though this is the case the colour fits in with the rest of the cover, which could represent how even though the magazine focus' more on the classics it still is a very high quality magazine and is just as good the other magazines on the market which focus more on modern artists. The red can link back with the main image as it connotes the idea of intensity, helping add small pops of intense movement to the very hard and focussed magazine. All of the colours used apart from yellow are ones that mostly fit into the male stereotype, yellow bleeds into the feminine stereotype however could also be used in the male stereotype as yellow could represent gold and gold then links in with crowns, and in England most of the royals that ruled over England were male, this again links back to the powerful semantic field this magazine has. By using powerful imagery and a colour palette it attracts the target audience of male adults in more. (DIRT)

Representation
L/O: to explore the concept of representation in music magazines.
Stereotype- An over simplified image of a particular type of person or object.
Examples of stereotypes for groups:
1) Teenagers- Teenagers who can't live without their phone (Usually female teenagers) Moody teenagers, Jocks, Pretty popular mean girls. Nerds whop have no friends, The bully, they wear hoodies and swear a lot, messy bedrooms, the bad boy etc.
2) Men- The classic lumberjack strong man, dumb or oblivious men, men who are only interested in women and drinking beer (although this fits more for american men) and the embarrassing dad, independent and they are stronger then women etc.
3) Americans- Dumb, the men are usually fat and love drinking beer and watching american football, they eat a lot of junk food and fast food, the women either want or have had plastic surgery, they are loud and
4) Lesbians- Butch/ Masculine, hyper feminine, they have short hair, they only hang around other lesbians etc.

In this music magazine, Marshmello is portrayed as a serious artist/ a powerful figure. I believe this as he is stood on a building over looking a busy city, much like how in scenes with batman, the masked hero is usually watching over the city as a protector. However where batman wears black Marshmello wears almost all white. This colour connotes the idea of innocence and heaven, and in many of his music videos marshmallow is shown to be innocent and shy until he starts dejaying when he comes out of his shell. This idea of him looking over a city as a way of showing his influence is made more clear as he seems to be staring down at the cars below as they drive by. He is above most people and closer to heaven then most.
By showing a lack of ethnicity and age he is showing himself to be a rebellious or odd musician. Most musicians gain views from both their voice and their looks and Marshmello goes against both by most of the time writing the lyrics to his songs and having other artists sing them and he edits them. Even when he does sing Marshmello actually edits the pitch of his voice to allow himself to hide his voice whilst still being able to sing

WWW: I think I came up with a creative idea for a music magazine and used my knowledge of other rock music magazine covers to influence my own.
EBI: I do however need to finish my magazine cover.

Music industry
Types of music videos:
Performance- A music video where the artist plays their song, it is simply them singing or their band playing their instruments- however they may switch between narrative parts as well.
Narrative- A music video where the video links to the lyrics in some way, it tells a story.
Concept- A music video where the video doesn't tell a story at all and it doesn't show the artist or band playing the song.
Narrative types:
I am using the case one for my research, which is made up of Avril Lavigne's Sk8r boi and Wheatus' Teenage dirtbag.
Sk8r boi:
The name of the artist who sings and performs sk8r boi is Avril Lavigne. I believe that the genre of the song is rock and that the genre of the music video that goes with it is a narrative disjuncture. The song was released in the uk on the 27th of August 2007
Wednesday 5th December 2018
Is any diegetic sound used and why?- Diegetic sound is used mainly in the beginning of the song before the actual music/ song starts, the sounds used are city sounds in the background, with the sound of graffiti cans being dropped and someone going down a rope at the foreground. I believe they do this to create a sense of atmosphere and realism for the audience before the song starts so they can understand and be brought on a journey with the artist easier.
Does the editing match the pace of the song? Does it change between the performance and narrative sections? Are special effects used? Why? What transitions are used and why?- The editing I believe matches the style of the song rather well, as it is fast paced to match the rhythm of the song, towards the end of the song more performance comes into play in the music video, as the band have set up and are now performing to their audience. No special effects are used in this music video, they do this to create a sense of realism as most of the video is set in a realistic setting so special effects such as effects symbolising magic would not fit in the music video as a whole. No transitions are used in the music video to keep the fast paced style throughout, this is a common trope in most rock music videos.
Is the narrative linear and developed or montage?- The music video for sk8r boi is mixture of linear and montage narrative as you can clearly see the band setting up for their performance, however between these clips are some that don't fit into the story as a whole.
Is the camerawork smooth and controlled or handheld and documentary style?- The camerawork in sk8r boi is hand held and documentary style to add to the realism of the narrative, this particular camera work is extremely obvious towards the end of the video.
Is the colour saturated or de saturated?- The colours used in sk8r boi are desaturated so as to fit in with the classic rock convention of being made up of stereo typical dark and dull colours. This helps attract fans of rock to the music video as when they see the desaturated cover image for the video they will feel compelled to click on it.
What values does it promote? The music video for sk8r boi paired with the actual lyrics of the song help to promote the idea of not judging a book by its cover and being yourself even if others don't like you for it.
In what ways does it follow conventions of film and tv with the setting and MES? (Intertextuality)- The music video for sk8r boi follows a few different conventions that most tv and film follow. This includes the classic hetero sexual relationship which can be found in most romance films and television programmes. The music video follows stereo typical MES conventions found in other media such as the classic rocker girl look which Avril is wearing as well as her fellow band members who are wearing the classic rock looks. They are all white. The story the music video follows is also a classic romance film trope. I know this because the whole idea follows a classic trendy mainstreamer (in terms of the young and rubican and lifestyle character types), who falls in love with the outsider rocker type. However this story does not have a stereotypical ending as the character of the song focuses on (the girl) does not end up with the boy who she loves. Instead Avril says that she ended up dating the boy because she looked past his exterior.
Can you apply Propp's character types to the narrative? how?-
Similarities and differences between the two music videos: (notes for me to write up later)

The radio One live lounge is mainly acoustic, there is little rehearsal for the show. The artists will perform one or two of their own songs, and then a cover of a popular song at the time or a song by a popular artist at the time. This cover is usually a contrast to the artists usual style of music.
The audience appeal of the Radio One Live Lounge is that listeners can experience something new from an artist that people around the world will also be hearing for the first time. They will get to experience and hear the artist or band in an intimate situation and hear it all live. If the listener ends up missing a live lounge, they don't need to worry, all they have to do is go onto Radio One Live Lounge's youtube channel to see the performances that they missed. The idea of being able to watch a performance in such a nice environment is different to most radio shows. The Radio One Live Lounge is also different to most other Radio shows as they have their artists perform covers of songs out of their comfort zone with little rehearsal time so that what the listener experiences is real. The Radio One Live Lounge is all acoustic which makes the songs seem more real and intimate.
The Live Lounge Website:
What can you access from the website? You can access the Luve Lounge Uncovered, the latest episode of the Live lounge, who played that month in the Live Lounge, interviews from Clara and DJ Ace and you can also get to the Radio One Live Lounge Extra homepage from the website.
